What Really Matters

What if the moments we don’t give a second thought to were the moments that mattered most of all?

The sound of water being poured into a glass

The eager anticipation of opening a package in the mail

The two second grin we pay a stranger waiting to cross the street, before we speed off fast

The initial moment you hear your favorite song on the radio while flipping through stations

The aroma of fresh tea leaves seeping before that first sip

The satisfaction of fresh folded laundry before it’s put away

The way the sun’s rays feel on your skin right before jumping into a pool

The giddiness that follows an innocent phone call, before you rush to the next task

The smell of onions caramelizing on the stove before the other ingredients are tossed in

The touch of wet clay before the potter glazes it dry

The courage you mustered up to address the elephant in the room

The perseverance you clung to while remaining vigilant and true

The growth you didn’t know was happening, as your cocoon spun tightly round you

The moment you came to realize that “coming out the other side” happened during the in-between

There is beauty to treasure in the process

There are pieces of gold to mine as we stop and savor

There is noise that can only be muted as we welcome in the silence

There is clarity that comes from the seeming mundane

There are moments meant to become memories

And there are memories meant to reflect who we are and who we are becoming.
